The best coffee maker is the one that fits your morning. Here is how the three main types compare.
Single-serve pod brewers
Fastest and cleanest: drop in a pod, press a button, done. Great for households where everyone wants a different coffee. The trade-off is cost per cup, since pods cost more than ground coffee. A reusable filter cup lets you use your own grounds in most Keurig machines.
Drip coffee makers
The cheapest way to make several cups at once. Programmable models can have a pot ready when you wake up. Look for a thermal carafe if coffee sits for a while, because hot plates can make it taste burnt.
Espresso machines
For lattes and cappuccinos at home. Machines with a built-in grinder are the simplest route to fresh espresso but take practice to dial in. Expect a learning curve, and budget for fresh beans.
Quick pick
- One cup, no fuss: pod brewer.
- A pot for the household: drip.
- Milk drinks and café-style coffee: espresso.
