Wired vs Battery Video Doorbells: Which Should You Get?
Installation, reliability and charging trade-offs for renters and homeowners.

Most video doorbells come in two versions: battery powered or hardwired to your existing doorbell. Both show you who is at the door. The difference is how they get power.
Battery doorbells
Install almost anywhere, because no wiring is needed. They are the usual choice for renters and doors without an existing doorbell. You will need to recharge the battery periodically; busy doors with many motion events drain it faster.
Wired doorbells
Use your existing doorbell wiring, so there is nothing to charge. They are often smaller and can support more continuous features. Installation means turning off power at the breaker and connecting two wires, a job many people do themselves in under an hour.
Before you buy
- Check your Wi-Fi signal at the front door with your phone.
- Look at what the subscription adds. Recording history and some features typically require a paid plan.
- Think about angle: a wedge mount helps if your door is beside a wall.
